Hello lovelies,
Today Julia Ann from Oh, Julia Ann is joining us & posting on vintage! I am just absolutely thrilled that I have the chance to be friends with such an adorable person who is also SO very up-to-date on mixing vintage with new pieces! Thank you so much to Julia Ann for being so fabulous ~ I know you all are going to love her post!

What’s old is new and what’s new is boring. Something like that, right? For a truly great outfit, I love to throw a few vintage pieces in, and this skater dress (from the late, great Timeless Authentic Garments) is the perfect example. By pairing the oversized flowers with a medium width stripe, the look stays cheeky and playful… Oh, and the added layers keep it warm enough for autumn’s brisk afternoons.

Funny story about this dress: I’ve had this piece in my closet for years, but it was never perfect. There was something off about the cut, so it never looked right with a jacket or–gasp!–my beloved boots. I loved the pattern, but it seemed too… something. It hung in my closet as this lonesome reminder of a perfect vintage find I could never figure out how to wear. It’s shameful that it took me four years to think about adding a patterned layer underneath, but at least it clicked before it made its way into my garage sale. After all, it has pockets, and we all know that dresses with pockets simply must be treasured.

The sizing of the patterns is key in making these layers work. If your favorite vintage frock features a teeny polka dot or skinny pinstripe, an equally weighted pattern should be paired. But remember to keep the color contrast high. What fun is mixing prints if you can’t see the difference?

A little pattern clashing here, a (heavy-handed) touch of costume jewelry there… Let’s keep the cooler seasons as playful as the scorching summer, shall we?

Always,

Julia Ann
